Location

Anthropologie Deer Park, IL

Project type

Ice Dye Window Display

Role

Designer and Fabricator

Date

Summer 2016

The 2016 Summer Windows at Anthropologie showcased the magic of ice dyeing fabric. Ice dye is the art of placing ice cubes on top of fabric, then sprinkling dye powder on top of the ice, letting the melting process dictate how the dye splits and bleeds, and where it ultimately lands on the fabric–leading to surprising and delightful results every time!
The goal was to keep a balance of 70% warm, 20% cool and 10% neutral in these windows so they didn't go into a fall color palate.
I did multiple color tests, but with this technique a lot is let to chance.
I built a gallery wall within the window to hang the dyed canvas. After that I went in and attached frayed strips of leftover dye canvas and hand sewed metallic paillettes to add a focal point and interest into an otherwise flat surface.
This ice dye fabric would later be used as a backdrop for multiple Fashion Shows at various Anthropologie sin the region.
