“The Joy of the Desolate” is a memory play.
The show had no real "prop" per se but had large scale memory boxes that the actors would interact with and take items out of.
The memory boxes were highly inspired by the works of one of my favorite artists, Joseph Cornell.
The actors could interact with the boxes by opening and closing the inner frames and by removing items from within. All items (including the frames) were sourced from flea markets, rummage sales, antique markets and on campus storage. Nothing was to look new and everything needed to have a "lived in" look.
